Part 5
First and Second Question Answers
Actors get chosen to perform plays that honor specific gods. Typically the plays were to honor the war goddess Athena. The actors were chosen by the boss or manager of the festival or ceremony for the god that they would be honoring. You would get chosen to be in a play or act during the festivals. Sometimes you would be only acting for the festivals honoring a certain god because they liked you best or because they thought that you were best fit for Athena or Dionysus. You performed in the performance that they wanted you to. If you didn’t do it or they didn’t think that you were doing the best job they would put somebody in your place. The actors do get to choose the masks that they want to use in the performance that will best represent the character or the scene. The masks they use are the masks that they think will make the best impression and prove the points, while making it worth while to watch. The masks that they choose to use is a very important because they illustrate the characters feelings and their personality. Masks are a part of Greek culture in theatre because they represent the characters that the regular people take on. This is very significant because that gives you the ability to change into your character without a hole lot of costume and design ideas/props.
Part 4
Actors wore the basic costume. People in Greek wore togas or war clothing if they were in war. Greek costumes were not as elegant and needy and they are today. Today costumes in plays are rarely not used just because they illustrate the characters. This helps the audience because we don’t always use masks as the Greeks did. So in Greek theatre the costumes were a minor part. They were often not even used because they wore togas and basically everybody wore togas in ancient Greece unless they were in war or at a ceremony. The costumes if they were used were then elegantly designed because they would serve a big purpose. The Greeks always thought things out so if they decided something then didn’t think that it fit very well they would change it immediately and this made there productions very nice to watch. The costumes were always well designed and they included using many colors and designs, always trying to illustrate the personality of the character wearing it. These costumes would be designed Togas, Robes, Capes, and such things. The outfits really illustrate a persons personality along with facial features and whether they are mostly smiley or mostly straight faced and serious. So the way that they dress with the masks changing the regular looks on them can change you from an upbeat looking person to somebody that looks like there mom just died every single day.
Part 3
Actors do not get paid for the plays and performances they put on for gods and goddesses. They get rewards based on the quality and how much the audience likes it. Some examples of rewards that they would get are such as baby goats, corn, crop food that can be grown from seeds. These rewards and gifts to the actors are what they live on kind of how we get paid and then we use that to by food and clothes. They didn’t have to buy food so they made it.(A lot cheaper) These rewards were what they ate everyday. They worked and instead of receiving money they received rewards like seeds, baby goats and cattle. In most cases the bigger the job and the more time you spend the more you get in return. So in a way the Greek culture of how you receive pay is like ours based on the amount you work along with merit. Greeks believed in receiving exactly what you put in. For example if you spend three months working for the festival celebrating Demeter than you get around three months of reward. You work for this time then you pay with last you that long.
